Ball Corp: Changing Gears After 100+ Years
Science → math → economics.
I changed my major in university a couple of times.
At the time I was worried about making those pivots. But now I know that it’s not a big deal to change your mind and interests.
Heck, even a 100-year old company can pivot. Look at Ball Corporation.
Its business has bounced around:
Glass jars → aerospace → aluminum packaging
Quite the journey:
- Founded in 1880
- Exited the glass jar business in 1996
- Built components for NASA's James Webb Space Telescope
- World’s #1 producer of aluminum beverage cans
It was in the jar business for over a hundred years and still(!) switched gears.
It’s an excellent example of how companies and careers can change.
And after all its changes, it’s now a huge company. $11.8B in revenue in 2024.
If you're worried about pivoting, think of Ball Corp.
